Frequently Asked Ferret QuestionsBy Mary R. Shefferman It comes with the territory: We hear a lot of the same questions over and over again. Here are four of the frequently asked questions we hear, along with brief answers and references so you can learn more about each topic. Why is my ferret going bald? Depending on where your ferret is losing fur, your ferret might have rat tail or adrenal disease. These are both common ferret problems. Read about them: Find Info at FerretNews Adrenal Disease in Ferrets: #59, #60, #79 Rat Tail in Ferrets: #95 | Find Info in Modern Ferret magazine Issue 4, Issue 6, Issue 8, Issue 10, Issue 14, Issue 21, Issue 22, Issue 26, Issue 30, Issue 26 |
How do I litter train my ferret? Litter training a ferret takes some work. For some ferrets, it takes a lot of work. You need to pay attention to what your ferret is doing and you need to be consistent. Read more about litter training: Does my ferret really need vaccinations? Canine distemper is virtually always fatal in ferrets. It is also airborne and easily transmitted from one ferret to the next or from a dog or your shoes. There are currently two USDA-approved canine distemper vaccines for ferrets, as well as one that is often used off-label. Some states require rabies vaccinations for all ferrets but those deemed by a licensed veterinarian to be too ill to be vaccinated. If your ferret is healthy and goes outside or interacts with the general public, you will definitely want to get him vaccinated. Read about vaccinating ferrets and vaccine reactions: Find Info at FerretNews Ferret Vaccinations: #44, #49, #91 Ferret Vaccine Reactions: #46, 5/27/02 article, #91 | Find Info in Modern Ferret magazine Issue 1, Issue 2, Issue 9, Issue 11, Issue 12, Issue 14, Issue 16, Issue 20, Issue 22, Issue 25 |
What kind of treats can I give my ferret? Ferrets are primary obligate carnivores, which means they must have a meat-based diet. The best choice for treats would be anything meat! Very small amounts of soft fruits, vegetables, or melons are all right, too. But never "hard" vegetables like carrots or hard foods like nuts (though smooth peanut butter is all right). To learn more about what you can and cannot feed your ferret, read these articles: You can get all the available issues of Modern Ferret magazine in the Super Monster Pack of back issues. |
Did You Know That... Washing your ferret too often can make him have a stronger odor. Most of us come to appreciate the warm musky aroma of a ferret, but we prefer not have an out-and-out stinky ferret. The way to keep the aroma at a pleasant level is to avoid bathing very often and to keep your ferrets ears clean. Frequent washing removes oils from your ferret's skin. So your ferret's glands work harder to replace those oils. The more you bathe your ferret, the harder those glands work to replace them. Along with the oil comes the aroma. Thus, washing your ferret every few months will keep him smelling better than washing him every week. Keeping up with ear cleaning and keeping your ferret's bedding clean will help reduce the strong ferrety aroma. Stick to these and your ferret will have the warm gentle musk aroma that you've grown to love. More on Ferret Bathing: #42 More on Ferret Bathing: #75 More on Ferret Ear Cleaning: #64
