California Legalization Update: Time To Make A Phone Call! We recently received an e-mail from the group Californians for Ferret Legalization (CFL) regarding California's current ferret amnesty bill, SB 89. If you live in California -- or even if you don't live in California -- you are asked to make a phone call. That's it. A simple phone call. The California Governor's office is seeking public opinion on this bill. Call this number: 916-445-2841 Then follow the voice prompts to the option that asks for your opinion on legislation. Listen carefully for the option to respond to legislation. Then listen for SB 89 and press the number option for support of SB 89. It's vital that as many people as possible call and "voice" their opinion. The California Governor's office needs to know how important this issue is to the people of California and those who would visit or move to California. Thus, even if you do not live in California, you can help by calling. If you know anyone in California, ask them to call as well. If it makes it to law, SB 89 would grant amnesty to ferrets currently residing in California, provided the owner pays a one-time fee of $75.00 per ferret and provides proof of rabies vaccination and neutering. The ferret is then granted amnesty for its lifetime (meaning, the ferret cannot be confiscated by California's Department of Fish and Game). Part of this one-time fee will help fund an environmental document looking at the potential impact of ferret legalization on the environment. Although amnesty is not complete legalization, it is a powerful first step. This is the furthest any of the legalization bills in California have gone and is the best chance for legalization thus far. So go make that phone call. Thanks to Jeanne Carley of CFL for sending out this heads-up.
