Hello Ferret Friend!

This is our first newsletter of 2004. Welcome to the new year.

You haven't heard from us in a while. Sadly, this is because we've been having a lot of troubles.

About our ferrets:

In the previous newsletter, we told you about ferret insulinoma and how Koosh was going for surgery.

Koosh initially seemed to be doing very well. However, he took a turn for the worse after he came home and we rushed him to the emergency vet. We then spent several days trying to get him to eat and caring for him. We kept bringing him back to our vet to see if anyone could figure out what was wrong with him.

Just before Christmas, Koosh was staying overnight at the vet's office and he died in his sleep. Several different vets had examined him over several days and he had managed to present misleading symptoms each time. It turned out that an ulcer in his intestines had perforated and the contents of his bowel seeped into his body. The ulcer wasn't there when our vet did the surgery, unless it was on the inside of the intestines and thus hidden from view.

This was a big shock for us. Koosh was only 5 years old -- he was big, strong, and full of energy. He was just beginning to show signs of insulinoma, and we felt that the best treatment would be to surgically "nip it in the bud."

I still think that we made the right decision. However, with any kind of surgery there are always risks.

  We will miss Koosh.

You can read more about what happened with Koosh here:

See Mary's Blog at ModernFerretBlog.com

Meanwhile, Trixie is not doing very well either. We had expected to have troubles with her since she is over 7.

This is a photo of Trixie we took a long time ago.

We've been giving Trixie Sub-Q (subcutaneous or under the skin) fluids twice a day and feeding her by hand throughout the day. We also have to give her medicine twice a day that she really hates. She is putting some weight back on, and we're doing the best we can to keep her warm and content.

Gabrielle now has no one to play with. She obviously misses Koosh. She does curl up with Trixie on the bed and helps keep Trixie warm.

All of these ferret troubles have really made us not feel like writing newsletters.

About this newsletter:

Emailing this newsletter has become more and more of a problem.

The first problem is that as global spam increases, it becomes more and more likely that you either won't notice or won't get the newsletter because your email provider is automatically considering it spam and hiding the newsletter from you.

You can help prevent this by adding our address "ferretferretnews.com" to your "friends" list.

  The more serious problem is:

For some reason, people keep reporting the emails from us as spam. I have no idea why they do this.

To sign up for the Ferret News, you have to fill out a form -- and most people also provide their address and the number of ferrets they own.

You then receive a confirmation email in which you have to click a link to signify that you really want to receive the newsletter.

How anyone could do both those things and then decide that the newsletter is spam is really beyond me.

The only way to get this newsletter is to request it and confirm your request. We never "just add" a name to our list.

We've been producing the Ferret News newsletter for a while now and sending it out to people for free. But for us, sending these emails is not free.

For now, we are going to switch to just emailing a notification that there is a new newsletter on the web site.

However, if things don't improve in this regard I really don't know what we'll do.
