Hello Ferret Friends! Welcome to Ferret News #48. If you haven't already taken a look at the tips for Halloween ferret safety, go to the Ferret News web site and read them now! http://www.ferretnews.com/articles/halloween-safety.html Enjoy the newsletter! --Mary & the Fuzzies < Technical Note >
We're been having a lot of problems with email filtering systems automatically considering our newsletter to be garbage. That doesn't make us happy. To help reduce this we are now (temporarily) sending the newsletters as plain text only -- even if you had requested the graphic version when you signed up. We'll provide links to the online version of the newsletter on our web site so you can see the pictures. You can help by making sure the address ferret ferretnews.com is on you "approved list", "friendly list", or whatever it is called that your email provider uses to help separate the good stuff from the junk. At the bottom of each newsletter is a link you can use to manage your account preferences, change your information (like where you live or how many ferrets you own), or to quit the list. That's all the technical stuff for now!

CLIP THOSE NAILS!
By Mary R. Shefferman Scary story: The other night I was in bed reading when I heard a bit of a commotion on the floor next to me. I didn't think anything of it; I figured it was just someone having a temper tantrum and taking it out on the sleep sack. Then I heard it again and figured I should at least look (hey, it's kind of tough to tear yourself away from Harry Potter!). Trixie, our oldest and sometimes cranky ferret, was standing on the sleep sack, which was crumpled up a bit oddly. Then she started fighting with the sleep sack. I suddenly realized she was stuck! I picked up Trixie and the sleep sack and found that her nail was caught on a (very short and very strong) piece of thread. I called to Eric so he could hold her while I tried to free her. It was no good -- I couldn't break the thread and I couldn't slide the thread out of Trixie's nail. Eric grabbed a nail clipper and I was able to get in there and snip the thread. A very shaken Trixie was freed. A little Ferretone and some calm cuddling and cooing settled her down. We immediately did a round of nail clipping on all the ferrets. Moral of the Story: Some ferrets' nails grow faster than others. Set a nail clipping scheduled based on your ferret whose nails grow the fastest. Note: Ferrets can and will tear out their entire nail if they get it caught. This is not only painful for them, but can lead to blood loss (though it's not usually life threatening, some ferrets are not as hardy as others). Keeping your ferrets' nails trimmed significantly reduces the risk of this kind of injury. JUST SAY NO TO WOOD CHIPS By Mary R. Shefferman Originally published in Modern Ferret Magazine Issue #5 [sold out] in the Minding Your Own Business column. Don't keep our ferret in wood chips. Don't. Don't. Don't. Yes, I know pet shops do it. Yes, I know you've seen photos of ferrets in wood chips. But don't do it. Ferrets really don't need wood chip bedding; they use a litter box and they're perfectly happy to curl up in an old sweatshirt. More important, wood chip bedding can cause some severe reactions in ferrets (runny eyes and noses, severe itching, difficulty breathing). Sure, wood chips are inexpensive and relatively easy to clean. But whatever time, effort, and money you save is not worth your ferret's health and well- being. If you want to line the pan under your ferret cage (if there's wire mesh flooring with a pan beneath it), you can use newspaper or paper towels. Why shouldn't you use wood chips? Both cedar and pine shavings are treated with oils that can irritate your ferret's skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract. When a ferret breathes in the fumes from these oils for a prolonged period of time, he can develop a wheeze or cough. On top of that, these things can irritate your skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract, as well (something of great importance to people like me, who have allergies and asthma). So do your ferret and yourself a favor and just say NO to wood chips. FERRET FACES ADDRESS BOOK ON SALE!!
