Note From Mary It's been a long time since I've even touched a ferret, so it seems a little odd for me to be sitting down to write about them. The last ferret Eric and I had was Gabby, who died nearly three years ago while Eric and I were healing from a serious car accident. These three years have been full of dramatic changes. When Gabby died, Eric and I decided to concentrate on getting ourselves healthy before we brought home any new pets. Sadly, part of that drive to be well led to our decision to end our marriage. We've each gone our own ways to pursue our dreams. These things happen. We wish each other well. Over the past few years I've spent a lot of time in the United Kingdom meeting new friends and fine-tuning my focus. I've also spent a lot of time with my family, which gives me a strength and fulfillment I'd forgotten. I suppose you could say that these past three years have been a time of profound transition for me. I thought about leaving everything ferret related behind me in this transition. But it's not easy to purge yourself of ferrets once they've gotten into your blood. (Never mind finding places for all the back issues of Modern Ferret, the books and the other ferrety items that I still have!) So I find myself here trying to catch up readers on what's been going on and why this site seems to have stopped dead. I've tried to at least keep up with fixing links on the site and posting current CafePress coupon codes for FerretDesigns and AmysDesigns. But I haven't been writing any new ferret articles. The problem is that when you don't have ferrets living with you, you don't have the unique inspiration that ferrets provide. Sure, I get night-time dream visits from my ferrets, but these are not enough. I think the last time I visited with "real" ferrets was at an AFC: A Ferret Club meeting. It was more than a year ago. (AFC is the Long Island, NY, ferret organization.) I miss the warmth of ferrets, but my living situation prevents me from getting any new fuzzies. The best I can hope for right now are brief visits -- in my dreams and in real life. But, because I continue to see ferrets left out of many various humane organization's literature, I feel compelled to get back to writing some new things about ferrets. So stay tuned.
Tips for the Holidays We're coming up on the holidays again, so I thought I'd offer up some good links on how to keep your ferrets safe through this season. Ferret Holiday Safety: http://www.ferretnews.com/articles/ferret-holiday-safety.html Ferret Holiday Travel: http://www.ferretnews.com/articles/holiday-traveling.html Ferrets Need Medical Attention Fast: http://www.ferretnews.com/issues/ferret-news-62.html#Did_You_Know_That_... In addition, make sure you keep your veterinarian's phone number and an emergency veterinary service's phone number near your phone. Check their holiday hours now and make note of them. You'll also want to make sure that any toys you or well-meaning friends or family bring for your ferrets are safe for ferrets. Just because the label says it's for ferrets doesn't mean it's safe for ferrets. Of course, have a happy and safe holiday season!
