Ferret FAQ: The Most Common Ferret Questions

Dear Ferret Friend,

We've had pet ferrets since 1992. We started Modern Ferret magazine in 1994. So we've had a lot of time to hear every possible sort of question from ferret owners... and it winds up being very frustrating.

Here are some of the questions we hear the most:

  • My ferret is losing all his/her hair. What's happening?
  • My ferret is throwing up. What should I do?
  • My ferret's poops are runny. What should I do?
  • My ferret's poops are yellow. What should I do?
  • My ferret's poops are green and slimy. What should I do?
  • My ferret is straining and can't go to the bathroom. What should I do?
  • My ferret goes into a trance and just stares off into space. What should I do?
  • My ferret is sneezing all the time. What should I do?
  • My ferret is foaming at the mouth. What should I do?
  • My ferret just lies there and doesn't move. What should I do?
  • My ferret has this lump on his/her tail. What should I do?
  • My ferret has lost the hair on his/her tail. What should I do?
  • My ferret has a red patch of skin. What should I do?
  • My ferret is walking with a limp. What should I do?
  • My ferret stopped eating. What should I do?
  • My ferret has gotten very thin and his/her skin is all loose. What should I do?
  • My ferret has a large lump growing somewhere. What should I do?

Why are all these questions frustrating?

BECAUSE the answer to all of them is: YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR FERRET TO AN EXPERIENCED FERRET VETERINARIAN.

You don't need to switch your ferret's food to some "natural" brand or chant a mantra or get some homeopathic potion or herbal remedy.

You shouldn't wait around for some "helpful advice." Ferrets are very small animals with a fast metabolism. The time you wait could be the difference between life and death.

You need to bring your ferret to a DOCTOR who treats ferrets.

NOT your neighbor, not some lady who runs a ferret shelter, and you certainly don't need to write to us. You need to get proper medical care for your ferret.

OR you can just sit around and watch your ferret get sicker and die.

It's up to you.

I don't know why so many ferret owners are reluctant to spend money to care for their ferrets.

Your ferret didn't ask to become your pet. You chose your ferret. You are responsible for caring for your ferret. That's the way having a pet works.

When we started Modern Ferret magazine in 1994, we were very aware of the kinds of questions ferret owners have -- because we're ferret owners.

What we discovered after more than a decade of knocking ourselves out while losing money publishing a magazine about ferrets was that most ferret owners just don't spend money on caring for their ferrets and most ferret owners don't spend money on learning about proper ferret care in the first place.

We produced all these great information-packed issues of Modern Ferret magazine, we got enormous amounts of praise from non-ferret owners for the effort that went into the magazine, we won awards for our excellent editorial content, we promoted proper ferret care across the country both in person at pet shows and on national television... until finally we just couldn't afford to publish the magazine anymore. We had no more money to lose.

So right now we've made up sets of all the magazines that we still have in print. That's 28 magazines in a box (it weighs about 9 pounds) and it contains over 1,000 pages jam-packed with all sorts of ferrety things -- from the fun and silly to the life-and-death serious. We call it the "Super Monster Pack" of Modern Ferret back issues.

This is it. We can't make new issues of the magazine (unless someone wants to give us a huge, huge, huge pile of cash -- printing color glossy magazines is expensive!). The ones we have are all there are -- and when they're gone, they're gone.

If YOU want to know what all these symptoms listed above mean, if you want to know what your options are for treatment, if you want to understand what your veterinarian is talking about so you can make informed decisions about your ferret's care and treatment, if you want to know the experienced ferret owners' secrets to training your ferret -- then you want to be reading all the Modern Ferret magazine issues you can get your hands on.

If you don't care about this stuff then why are you wasting your time and ours by reading this newsletter?

This page has a *partial* list of the articles you'll find in the Super Monster Pack of Modern Ferret magazine back issues:

Plus we now have available for sale a few of our personal copies of some of the rare back issues (the ones not included in the Super Monster Pack). We don't have many of these left -- and when they're gone, they're gone. See them here:

Remember that Modern Ferret isn't only about serious medical stuff, you'll also find articles on topics like:

  • training you ferret to stay on your shoulder
  • games to play with your ferret
  • tricks to teach your ferret
  • funny things that ferrets do
  • toys you can make for your ferret
  • and of course, the great ferret photos and funny stories that made us famous!

"I found the magazines to be an excellent source of information - I think of this collection of magazines as a Ferret Encyclopedia. For the price, I don't think there's a better source of well-written, informative and downright fun articles on everyone's favorite little creatures."
